Washing Your Hair Better: This is What You Should Do Once a Week With Shampoo

Because of my job and personal interest I watch every step they take at the hairdresser when I wash my hair. I often learn something new even though I have written many articles about it. That happened to me at Salon YÖY when the stylist told me to leave the shampoo on for three minutes during the second wash. She was applying one of their popular products called Let it Bloom made with products from the Japanese-inspired brand Ki.Su. I was used to waiting times only for conditioner or mask so leaving shampoo on for several minutes surprised me. But the team explained why I should do this once a week at home.

Doing it more often could dry out the hair & scalp. They said it is good to leave the shampoo in at home especially if you plan to apply a mask or treatment afterwards. The shampoo not only cleans but also helps detoxify the scalp and hair by removing traces of silicones and product buildup. It also opens the cuticle slightly which allows the mask or treatment to work better. They explained this should be done during the second wash.

Shampoo Application: Where Most People Go Wrong

The experts at Ki.Su confirm that this is generally the step where most mistakes happen. Here are some common errors according to the brand’s specialists: Shampoo should be applied primarily to the scalp rather than directly to the mid-lengths & ends. The massage technique should be gentle without harsh rubbing or tangling of the hair. Work the scalp using conscious and respectful movements.

The middle sections and ends also need cleaning but should not be rubbed vigorously. These areas should be washed using the lather from the scalp while moving from top to bottom in the natural direction of hair growth to avoid damaging the cuticle. The experts emphasize that proper washing should never be aggressive. Protecting the cuticle from this initial step is essential for achieving flexible and light hair with natural movement.

Common Hair-Washing Mistakes to Avoid

The main focus during washing is shampooing but people often make mistakes in the steps that follow. One common error is failing to rinse out the shampoo completely. Experts explain that leftover product makes hair feel stiff & weighed down. Another problem is washing hair too quickly without being thorough. This leaves buildup on the scalp and stops treatments from working properly. You should also follow the recommended time when using hair masks and always apply heat protector before blow drying. These are simple but essential rules for washing hair correctly that everyone should keep in mind.
